10 Actors Who Were Not Sober While Shooting Movie Scenes

The cast of Texas Chainsaw Massacre ate weed brownies before filming stunt work scenes.

In an interview with Chelsea Handler on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Joey revealed that she took an edible right before the boardwalk scene where her character, Elle, confronts her best friend, Lee.

She got the edible from her costar, Taylor Zakhar Perez, who offered it to her. He also took one because he ran out of scenes to shoot.

Joey explained, “I got so violently high.” She added: “You know when you’re really high all you can say is, ‘I’m so high’? That’s where I was.”

In one of the scenes in the film, Margot had to stand completely naked in a doorway, and she was terrified. “I came to work that morning and I was shaking, so scared, like, ‘I can’t do this,'” she said.

A crew member gave her some tequila at 9am to calm her nerves. Margot said, “I took three shots and then I took off my clothes and did the scene and I was fine. It really helped my hands tremble and gave me a bit of confidence.”


Gunnar Hansen, who most notably portrayed Leatherface, revealed in his memoir how high he was on weed while filming Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

In his book, Chain Saw Confidential: How We Made the World’s Most Infamous Horror Movie, Gunnar said that the man who owned this house where they were filming grew weed in his field and that the cast and crew used it.

One of the editors even made weed brownies, which they ate before filming the last few scenes, including dangerous stunt work.

Josh Duhamel accidentally smoked a real joint while filming Spaceman.

One of the scenes was Bill Spaceman playing Josh smoking a joint. Josh said: “The truth is that on the first day, the first shot of the film, I was rolling a joint. Normally they make fake weed, but nobody told me it was real weed. So I smoked it and the next few hours, I was high and it wasn’t supposed to be.”


Michael Rapaport had to be sedated while filming a scene in True love.

In the film, Michael had to be in a scene where two other characters were doing a drug deal on a roller coaster. Rapaport said: “I don’t like roller coasters. They had to convince me to ride them, and I threw up, so we had to film again a week later. The second time they sedated me. Some of the photos make me laugh because I’ve gone crazy and some make me cry because I really thought I was going to poop.”


Wesley Snipes would smoke weed all the time while filming Leaf: Trinity.

Wesley’s co-player, Patton Oswalt, remembered that Wesley was often high. “Wesley was just fucking crazy in a hilarious way. He wouldn’t come out of his trailer and smoke weed all day. That’s fine with me because I had all these DVDs I wanted to catch up on. We were in Vancouver, and it was always raining. I held the door of my trailer open to smell the evening rain while I was watching a movie.”

In the film, Billy played a foul-mouthed alcoholic burglar, and he spent a few days drinking as a form of method acting.

Billy said he was most drunk during the scene where his character got drunk at the mall. Billy started the day with three glasses of vodka and cranberry juice, then some Bud Lights. “By the time I got there, I barely knew I was in a movie,” he said.

The movie was about a craft brewery, so it featured a lot of scenes of the characters drinking beer. Olivia mentioned that in many of those scenes the beer was real.

Olivia said, “We hammered the whole movie because it was real beer, because beer on that set was cheaper than water, because we were shooting in a brewery.”

Anna also said: “During a scene where I’m playing cards with Jake (Johnson), they actually gave me beer, and I didn’t realize it! And so every time I lost, I hit beer, and I didn’t I didn’t realize it was real until halfway through the recording. I thought, ‘I’m super drunk right now!’ She added, “For part of the movie it was fine, and it worked in the scene, so it was helpful to them. But I found it especially nerve-wracking.”


Many of the cast of Dazed and confused was high during filming.

The film’s director, Richard Linklater, said in the film, “It wasn’t real marijuana, although the cast admits to being stoned in several scenes, especially towards the end.”

Ben Affleck said his co-stars, including Matthew McConaughey, would smoke weed and drink heavily during filming, although he himself did not participate.


And finally, Denise Richards and Neve Campbell shared margaritas before filming a kiss scene in Wild things.

In Denise’s memoirs, real girl next door, Denise said the producers asked her if she was okay with actually kissing Neve instead of faking the kiss. Denise agreed and getting ready for the kiss wrote, “Neve and I got into her trailer and shared a pitcher of margaritas before doing the scene. Neither of us had ever kissed another girl. … Everyone has a first time.”
