15-year-old in critical condition after being hit in the head while surfing on top of NYC train

A 15-year-old boy is in critical condition after hitting his head on Thursday night while surfing on a train in New York City.

Responding to the 111th Street station on Roosevelt Avenue in Queens at 6:08 a.m., police found the teen unconscious atop a 7-year-old train heading south, New York City police said.

According to police, the boy drove on top of the train car when it entered the station and hit “an unknown object” with his head and “suffered serious head injuries”.

He was lifted from the roof of the train and transported to Elmhurst Hospital in critical condition. He is still in critical condition Friday morning, police said.

An investigation into the incident is underway.

Earlier this month, a video circulated on social media showing about eight people on the subway surfing, running and even dancing atop a J train heading north as it passed over Williamsburg Bridge. Those suspects have not been identified.

Subway surfing, however, is dangerous. In October 2021, a 32-year-old man died after falling on rails while surfing the subway on a J train across Williamsburg Bridge.
