Two teenage boys enjoying a day at the beach drowned Friday after being underwater for nearly an hour, police said.
Authorities said the two boys, both 13 years old, were with a group of friends along Jamaica Bay when they fell into the water around 11:40 am, police officials said.
Panic quickly developed as the boys’ friends and witnesses rushed to call 911 and get the boys to safety.
A team of at least nine rescue swimmers were sent to the beach along with lifeboats in what turned out to be a protracted search for the teens.
Divers recovered the first fry around 12:30 p.m., but it would be another 45 minutes before they were able to locate the second. Both were rushed to Jamaica Hospital.
One of the boys was pronounced dead not long after he was discovered, while the second fought for hours before finally dying.
A sign by the water warns of strong currents and sudden drop-offs, and a history of drowning on the Howard Beach shoreline.
The circumstances that led to the boys’ fall into the water are still under investigation.
