5 Unexpected Uses of AirTags: GPS Tracker for Luggage and More

I’m sure you can think of a dozen things that you lose on a regular basis, from your keys to your phone. These are common items you can post Apple AirTag on, but we have a few more things you may not have thought of before.

While you generally need to be within Bluetooth range to find your AirTag, you can use Apple’s Find My service to find it if it’s further away but – and this is important to remember – still within the range of another Apple device (here is how the Find My Network works). To do this, put your AirTag in Lost Mode and you’ll be notified once it’s in range of the Find My network.

We’ll tell you some unusual places to put an AirTag to avoid constantly retracing your steps. For more details, here is how do you know if an AirTag is tracking your location? on android.

In your tent when you go for a walk

If you’re setting up camp in a location you’ve never been to, putting an AirTag in your tent can help you find your campsite easily. For example, if you decide to hike several miles in a day, you can use Find My to find the last location of the AirTag (your tent) and get directions back to the campground. Remember it has to be within range of someone else’s device, so don’t rely on this in the wild. (This is also why Apple advises against using AirTags on pets.)

In your jacket pocket

How many times have you left your coat in a restaurant, bar, or a friend’s house? Forgetting to pack your coat when you go outside is easy to do, especially when the weather is warmer than you expected or your hands are full of leftovers and cups to take with you.

If you know you’ll be hanging your jacket on a coat rack — or the back of a chair — when you arrive, place an AirTag in the bag so you know where you left it. This can help prevent yet another favorite jacket from being lost and less money out of your wallet to replace it.

In your luggage

Airports can be tricky to navigate and can become especially difficult when trying to find the right baggage collection service. Sometimes you wait 30 minutes for your bags to finally roll onto the assembly line – and sometimes they get lost. To ease the stress of searching for your suitcase, you can put an AirTag tracker in it so you can track where it is.

This can help you find out if your bags have been left on the plane, if they’re on the conveyor belt but you haven’t seen them yet, or if someone accidentally grabbed your luggage. Once you know where your bags are, you can remedy the situation and move on to where you are going.

In your laptop bag

You can easily leave laptop bags in a cafe when you go to get coffee for everyone at the office. When your hands are full and you’re distracted wondering how you’re going to open your car door, it’s hard to remember to grab your bag from the booth you were in.

That’s why it’s a good idea to put an AirTag in one of the pockets. Not only can you locate your expensive laptop, but you can also keep any confidential business or personal information you had in your bag.

In a hidden place on your bike

If it hasn’t happened to you, you probably know someone who has had this experience. You come home from a bike ride, go inside to get water and some food, and completely forget about your bike that you left outside. Or maybe you went to the store, didn’t lock your bike, and when you came back it was gone.

If you place an AirTag in a hidden place on the bike, you can easily find it. However, it is not recommended to track down the bike yourself. It is best to warn the police and have them collect your bike to avoid dangerous situations.

This method will also work on your car if it’s been stolen or towed – or if you can’t remember where you parked it. But if you have an iPhone and it’s connected to your car via Bluetooth, your phone can locate where you last left it.
