6 potential free targets with ties to Darvin Ham

The next head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers will be longtime assistant coach Darvin Ham, with ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski first making the news Friday. Ham previously served as an assistant coach with the Milwaukee Bucks and was a long-time member of Mike Budenholzer’s staff. Ham followed coach Bud to the Bucks after he was let go by the Atlanta Hawks.

Ham’s first assistant appearance in the NBA was with the Lakers, so it’s come full circle that he’s now been hired to clean up the mess and make the Lakers a contender again. Granted, most of the things wrong with the Lakers have nothing to do with the head coach, but it’s still hard to do not get excited about this step.

The Lakers made the right decision by hiring a savvy assistant coach who hasn’t had his chance in the league yet. Ham really seems to have a lot of respect in the whole league and taking the risk of being special is way better than hiring another renewal band like Doc Rivers or Terry Stotts.

It is the first step in what will be an important outdoor season for the Lakers and could be a very influential step for how the team works this summer.

Now the Los Angeles Lakers can target free agents with previous ties to Darvin Ham.

Whether you play under him for the Milwaukee Bucks or Atlanta Hawks, there’s a decent list of free agents that should be available for the minimum with connections to Ham. Those connections could be beneficial for those free agents, as the Lakers front office gets Ham’s input on who the team should aim for this summer.

Obviously the Lakers won’t sign all of these free players, but don’t be surprised if one or two of these six are signed solely because of their affiliation with the new Los Angeles Lakers head coach.
