A record mushroom season! – ABC Canberra

Did you spot an abundance of mushrooms this fall?

A group of mushrooms is referred to as a troop, and recent rains have resulted in the emergence of a diversity of fungi in the ACT and the Capital Region.

Children’s book illustrations, such as Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and some of Enid Blyton’s stories, show a striking blotchy red-and-white mushroom, the fly agaric or Amanita muscaria.

Adrienne Francis of ABC Canberra spoke to botanist Dr Gregory Moore of the University of Melbourne about the seasonal event and the need for the community to watch out for poisonous mushrooms, but not touch or consume them.
