Bronx Jewelry Heist Tied To String Thefts Netting Robbery Crew $250K – NBC New York

Surveillance video shows a thief with a sledgehammer making his way through the windshield of a Bronx jewelry store, part of a series of at least 18 linked NYC robberies in which police said there are nearly $250,000 worth of merchandise stolen.

The video, taken around 4 p.m. Sunday, shows the black-clad man bringing a sledgehammer to the windshield of the M&NP Jewelery Store on White Plains Road in the Pelham Parkway section in broad daylight.

“Suddenly we hear a boom, a loud boom. The last thing on my mind was that we were going to be robbed,” said store employee Yailin Reyes, who was working inside at the time.

Reyes and her colleagues jump back when the hammer first hit the window. She somehow had the presence of mind to run to the front gate and pull it down.

“My first instinct was to close the gate. And as I was closing the gate, the man got stuck between the glass and the gate, and I was like, ‘Oh my god, am I going to cut it in half?’ said Reyes.

A second robber came to help his friend and held up the gate. They couldn’t get much, but police said the duo seized 10 gold chains and five gold pendants.

The total loss was $20,000, but Reyes’ boss knows it could have been a lot worse. He told them to close the gate in case of a break-in.

“When he saw that I was the only one who controlled my emotions and did what he said, he was happy,” said Reyes.

Police say the incident is part of a raid on jewelers in the city in recent months. At least 18 stores have been affected and the robbers got away with more than $247,000 worth of goods stolen.

In the latest incident, on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue, police said the same crew broke into a store just a day after the Bronx robbery and got away with more than $187,000 worth of jewelry.

Reyes fears the thieves will return, but said the store has made some adjustments for security and what’s displayed up front. The store owner spent $40,000 on the new, thicker windows.

“We now have better windows. Instead of putting gold on the front, we used silver and stainless steel,” she said.

The suspects have not yet been caught. An investigation is underway.
