Data.ai has released a new report in partnership with International Data Corporation (IDC) that analyzes the rising fortunes of the gaming market. Mobile gaming, in particular, has been steadily increasing for nearly a decade and now has a massive lead over its peer markets in the PC and console space.

That’s not to say that part of the gaming market is doing poorly. In fact, the entire industry will reach $222 billion this year. Data.ai also says it expects a boost in console sales as more PS5s and Xbox Series consoles become available throughout the year. But mobile gaming in particular is gaining momentum.

Lexi Sydow, head of market insights at Data.ai, spoke to GamesBeat in an interview about why she thinks the mobile market is growing. “I think COVID was the catalyst, but the trends were there, so I think it’s just the fact that COVID has given us a wider reach of people in the gaming world. I think there were a lot of people who weren’t really into a mobile game, and probably did for the first time during COVID. † † but ultimately we’ve seen this happen over time.”

Who plays mobile games?

In addition to consumer spending, Data.ai also reported that mobile gaming has a diverse audience compared to its peer markets. For example, 47% of the top games based on consumer spending are skewed by women (meaning they are more likely to appeal to female players than males). Both Generation Z and the baby boomer generation also spent more on mobile games, according to the report.

Sydow also told GamesBeat that the increasing power of mobile devices is another source of their appeal to gaming: “The device specifications of a mobile phone are so advanced and we can have such high-quality games and core games produced on a mobile phone, and the phone as machine can handle it now.”

This is confirmed by the report, which notes: “The console and mobile experience is also being merged; mobile devices can now deliver console-like graphics and gameplay experiences, along with cross-platform competitive and social gaming features.
