Death of Superman Variant Art Celebrates an Iconic DC Poster

An iconic poster, originally published in 1992 to coincide with “The Death of Superman”, is given a moving tribute via a new variant cover that commemorates DC’s 30th anniversary of the iconic story.

Ivan Reis and Danny Miki’s “Funeral for a Friend” Variation for The Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Special #1 hits comic book shelves in November. The cover shows Lois Lane in front of a memorial dedicated to the Man of Steel, featuring the tattered remains of Superman’s cape, which was destroyed in his decisive battle against Doomsday. The living legends of the DC Universe are behind her. These heroes prominently wear the black S-bracelets that originally appeared in comics across the DC line in the wake of Superman’s death. As a nod to history, they all wear their 90s outfits too.

The cover pays tribute to a promo poster titled “Funeral for a Friend”, illustrated by Dan Jurgens and Brett Breeding, and released to promote the original “The Death of Superman” storyline. The poster featured a similar lineup of characters wearing black armbands, but saw the likes of Atom, Batman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Robin, and Wonder Woman carrying Superman’s coffin in the foreground rather than centering Lois Lane. The image was reused numerous times for store posters, trading cards and paperbacks. Jurgens unveiled in a tweet from 2018 that, on some versions, Beast Boy and Shazam have replaced Batman and Robin due to licensing restrictions.

The Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Special #1 features four new stories revolving around the death of Clark Kent and debuts a new villain named Doombreaker. The special also unites creators who worked on the original storyline, including Breeding, Butch Guide, Jurgens, Jon Bogdanove, Jerry Ordway, Louis Simonson, Roger Stern, Tom Grummett and others. Aside from Reis and Miki’s “Funeral for a Friend” homage, several other variations of covers from big-name comics – including Jim Lee, Dan Mora and Francesco Mattina – will be available.

DC will release a special reprint of Superman #75, the issue where the Man of Steel was killed by Doomsday, on November 1. The Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Special #1 follows this release, on November 8th. A new omnibus edition in which all the songs of the story and additional material are collected, called The Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Deluxe Editiongoes on sale on December 6.
