THE ANGELSJune 29, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Discovery Behavioral Health, Inc., a growing network of evidence-based treatment centers for mental health, substance use and eating disorders, has David Semanco as program director of New Life Addiction Counseling & Mental Health Services in Pasadena, Marylandjust outside Annapolis

David Semanco, Program Director, New Life Addiction Counseling & Mental Health Services

Semanco is a Master Addiction Counselor specializing in the application of complementary therapies to enhance the addiction treatment and recovery process. He entered addiction treatment in 2002 after successful careers in information technology and music. He continues to incorporate technology and music into clinical practice, as evidenced by his work with neurofeedback and music therapy.

New Life is an outpatient center for co-occurring conditions, which provides tailored treatment to empower people struggling with substance abuse, drug and alcohol addiction, along with the mental health issues that can contribute to the addiction. By offering a variety of treatment tactics — from outpatient group therapy and recommendations for 12-step programs to drug therapy (MAT) — patients can begin to recognize their behaviors, identify challenges and develop healthy lifestyles.

A graduate of the prestigious Berklee College of Music in BostonSemanco says his journey into the behavioral therapist profession began in the 1980s when a professor loaned him his “newfangled Apple PC” to complete his master’s thesis. Realizing that he had a knack for conveying complex information in layman’s terms, he soon found himself helping academic colleagues learn the burgeoning field of computer science. He eventually obtained a master’s degree in Human Services with an emphasis on addiction care

“If there is a common thread running through my career, it is that I like to help people,” he says.

Samanco has worked in hospitals, residential and outpatient settings, providing direct care and developing programs for adolescents and adults. Over the past two decades, he has seen a major shift in the public perception of substance use disorders.

“There has been a marked shift from stigmatizing alcohol and drug addiction as a moral failure and to realizing that it is a chronic brain disease. Similarly, treatment has shifted from a singular focus on changing behavior or changing ‘bad’ people into good people’ to address brain chemistry as the cause,” he says.

He is known for his ability to create and nurture strong yet compassionate multidisciplinary clinical teams. and recovery support at the national level.

“David’s extraordinary career, diverse life experience, and his pioneering work in neurofeedback all complement our company’s commitment to innovative treatment approaches,” said John PeloquinCEO and chairman of DBH.
