E-scooter rider sustains life-threatening injuries in Melbourne fall

An e-scooter rider is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after a serious fall in Melbourne’and CBD.
Law enforcement said the man in his 50s was heading west on the footpath on Collins Street, Docklands, when he fell just after 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

The seriously injured man was rushed to hospital.

Police say the exact circumstances of the fall are unknown and an investigation is underway.

The number of injured people requiring hospital treatment for scooter accidents is on the rise.

The Royal Melbourne Hospital said the number of e-scooter accidents has risen from 29 in 2020 to 76 in 2021.

In 2022, a total of 129 riders have been admitted so far, 16 of whom have been treated for serious injuries.

E-Scooter trial operator, Neuron, claims Melbourne is one of the safest programs it has run.

According to the law, E-scooter riders are only allowed to use bicycle paths, shared paths and slow-moving roads.
