While Elden Ring is technically playable in co-op, the complicated way developers FromSoftware has implemented the mode so almost no one ever suffers from it. That’s going to change thanks to this incredible mod by means of Luke Yuic†
It does… basically what you hoped official co-op would do, letting you and a few friends jump into the game together and just play, with no weird rules or restrictions getting in the way. Here’s the official description:
Simply put, the mod allows you to play the entire game with friends without any restrictions. This theoretically makes it possible to play the game from tutorial to final boss completely in one co-op session.
† If a player dies, he will respawn in the same world at the last bonfire where he rested. The session does not end.
† By defeating enemy bosses and clearing areas, employees are no longer sent home.
† All the fog walls/barriers that normally limit the multiplayer zone (along with their respective teleports) are gone.
† All players can torrent (assuming they have the whistle) together in a session.
† All waypoints on the map are synchronized, making it easier for you to navigate the world in a group.
† When a player rests on a Site of Grace, the world status is reset for all players. This is necessary to avoid enemy desynchronization.
† Game progress events completed in online play will also progress the game in your own world.
Players are free to explore the entire game map (overworld, underground, legacy dungeons, etc.) together and can split up if desired.
Anyone can use Torrent? Waypoints are synced? Your progression is carried over? benawesome! Of course, to get all that working, a few changes had to be made to the base experience† Most importantly, the ability to roam with friends indefinitely makes the game a lot easier, so a number of balance adjustments have been made, including adding a third level of enemy scaling, which locks out anyone who dies in a boss fight in a spectator mode and inflict rot on everyone who dies in a co-op session.
Invasions are gone, because they don’t work with the way the co-op mode was built, and the Stakes of Marika have also been removed because they cause “connection issues”. And the whole thing basically comes with a warning that while it works, it’s also still a work-in-progress and players will run into bugs everywhere.†
