Federal Labor has pledged to fund billed emergency care clinics in Darwin and Alice Springs in bulk and provide $10 million towards the purchase of a second CareFlight rescue helicopter in the Northern Territory, if chosen within two weeks.

Announcing the policy in Darwin on Saturday, Shadow Education Minister Tanya Plibersek said the “Medicare emergency care clinics” would alleviate hospital emergency rooms by providing an alternative option for families requiring urgent care from a doctor or nurse. need.

The announcement is part of a pledge of $135 million Labor funding over four years to set up a trial of 50 such clinics in every state and territory.

“We know that hospitals across Australia have been under tremendous pressure during COVID-19,” said Ms Plibersek.
