They say you’re one workout away from a better mood. Can you imagine a hula hoop being thrown into that active mix? Instructor Melissa Bloomfield realized she was on to something special when she decided to bring a youthful exuberance to fitness. But her discovery was purely coincidental.
“I got into hula hoop fitness by accident. A friend of mine discovered hoop lyogini, a transformational fitness regimen that integrates hula hoop with yoga and mindful meditation. We decided to buy hula hoops and try it ourselves,” she explained to lifestyle.
The path was paved with the best of intentions, but didn’t notice that they bought the wrong hula hoop on the spot. Their failed attempt sent them back to the drawing board. Then on one of her trips, her friend inherited the right set of hoops and brought them back to Jamaica. “I was at her house one night, picked up one of the hoops she had brought down and it really stuck,” she said.
Bloomfield was fascinated by the simple yet indescribable joy of the activity: “I got the best high with the music. It was just so wonderful.” For her, it was the youthfulness of it all, recalling the toys from her childhood. The condition only came into play when others began to recognize the difference in her body.
She embarked on a 30-day hooping challenge every day. And at that time people started asking if she did hula hoop lessons and they also asked about the whereabouts of this hula hoop. Like Bloomfield, they too began to reminisce about this stunner from the previous game that they held so dear.
She still didn’t have it in her mind until she noticed the change in her body and way of thinking. It’s more than just the body, she said, there was a unique attunement with her mind, body and soul – which is exactly what HulaFit Yes is all about.
“For the mind, hula hoop relieves stress and improves mental clarity. It stimulated creativity and imagination. When you’re in that hoop, you can get so lost with the music and the movements of your body; it provides a meditative space,” she shared. It is a full body workout, improving core strength, eye coordination and balance while increasing energy.
As for the spirit, Bloomfield explained that the hoop ignites joy from within and makes you happy. It calms your emotions, nurtures your well-being and boosts this great sense of pride.
Since the first five weeks of operation, the response has been good. People are constantly asking if she has classes. Now if she’s going to sell hula hoops. “As a mother-entrepreneur I thought it would be great to go to the gym. It’s something people should take seriously. And I do believe it’s a great, low-impact way to lose weight,” she added.
According to the instructor, her hula fit is a lot of fun. The low-impact workout includes on-the-body dance and out-of-body movement. “One of the benefits of hula hoop classes is that you burn calories and body fat and lose inches. The classes boost your cardiovascular fitness, challenge your core muscles, improve your balance, and work the lower body muscles as a family-oriented activity. It’s a similar burn like running and a high-intensity workout.
The only hurdles she’s encountered so far is showing some people hula hooping that goes beyond a gaming activity, just for kids, to extend the scale to adults as well in terms of health and wellness.
Proud and passionate about her craft, she hopes to expand her clientele and continue to change lives, hoop at a time. Her advice to people looking for a fitter version of themselves is to just go for it.
