Since moving to Australia from America, one of the things I miss most about my home country is the sheer number of fast food chains to choose from. Judge me if you will, but fast food is actually part of our culture – and as a former Washingtonian, Five Guys is the best of the best. And although Sydney beat us to the top in the last two years by opening two stores in the city, Melburnians are finally getting a taste of the cult-favorite burgers and chips.
From August 8, you can head to Southbank to eat the giant burgers and crispy fried chips with peanut oil. Five Guys is known for making everything to order, so you can say goodbye to soggy burgers and fries that have been sitting under a heat lamp, waiting for the next poor sod to place an order. You may notice it’s a bit more expensive than Macca’s, but the portions are generous; even if you order small chips, the bottom of your bag is guaranteed to be filled with loose extras that will seep oil onto your bag – gross, but delicious.
The no-nonsense menu is also highly customizable, offering over 250,000 different possible burger combinations and over 1,000 ways to order your milkshake. I’m no mathematician, but you can probably go there once a week for the rest of your life and never eat the same meal twice. If you’re not sure where to start, the classic order is a cheeseburger “all the way,” meaning it’s decked out with pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, mayonnaise, mushrooms, grilled onion, ketchup, and mustard.
The Southbank connection can accommodate 79 diners and will be decked out in the chain’s classic red and white decor. And some more good news: it will be joined by other Melbourne venues over the next year.
