Rumors suggest that the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro models will feature always-on display technology, similar to the Apple Watch, and hints at what that always-on display might look like in the latest Xcode 14 beta.

As noted on Twitter by MacRumors contributor Steve Moser, the Xcode 14 beta has an interesting Lock Screen interface that eliminates details from an on-screen widget when the screen is activated. The animation indicates that the ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ models can remove intricate details from widgets and other content on the lock screen when the iPhone is locked and the always-on screen is active.

iOS developer @rhogelleim also noted signs of a black and white version of a widget that is mostly in color in the Xcode 14 beta that may be related to the always-on display.

The most recent beta version of iOS 16 also includes hints of a “sleep” mode for wallpapers and provides more information about how the always-on screen will work. “Sleep” versions of wallpapers are darker, causing bright colors to fade, which might save battery life when used with an always-on screen.

The Always-on display functionality is rumored to be limited to the ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ and ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ Max as these devices will have the necessary display technology. The iPhone 14 Pro‌ and Pro Max are rumored to have refresh rates ranging from 1 Hz to 120 Hz, an improvement over the 10 Hz to 120 Hz refresh rates available with the iPhone 13 Pro devices.

The refresh rate of 1 Hz ensures that the time, widgets and maybe notifications are visible while the ‌iPhone‌ is in sleep mode. Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro‌ and Pro Max models would also get a no-notch design that instead uses pill-shaped and punch-hole cutouts for Face ID and camera hardware, upgraded rear cameras and A16 chips, with full details available in our special iPhone 14 Pro collection.
