The Southeast District Major Crime Unit has been called in to assist the Vernon RCMP in a murder investigation after a man’s body was found at 6 Mile Creek Road on Okanagan Indian Band land.
The Vernon/North Okanagan RCMP was contacted at 6:30pm on Sunday, May 29 after witnesses discovered the body after an altercation with an unknown man who was driving recklessly in the area.
It turned out that the vehicle had been stolen, and on Monday it was traced to a company in Vernon. A man associated with it was arrested when the vehicle was recovered. He remains in custody and investigators try to establish his connection to the case.
Forensic investigators will speak to witnesses in the 6 Mile Creek Road area and look for video that can shed more light on what happened.
“While this investigation is still in its early stages, officers are advising that there are no known threats to public safety,” said Detective Inspector Brent Novakoski, Senior Investigating Officer of the BC RCMP Major Crime Section. “Detectives are asking 6 Mile Creek Road residents to search their property for anything that is missing or out of place.”
RCMP points out that no members of the Okanagan Indian Band are currently involved in the incident.
The BC Coroners Service is conducting its own investigation into the death. The victim’s identity has not been confirmed and will not be released pending an autopsy.
