What a difference 48 hours can make. Just yesterday, Deputy Labor leader Richard Marles took part in the election to become Deputy Prime Minister.
On Monday, he will act as acting prime minister as Anthony Albanese leaves with Penny Wong to meet the three Quad leaders from the US, Japan and India.
Key Labor leaders Anthony Albanese, Penny Wong, Richard Marles, Katy Gallagher and Jim Chalmers will be sworn in Monday at Government House ahead of the pivotal quad rally.
Marles told Today it all still felt “very surreal.”
“We were so focused on making sure we got every vote that last night I struggled to see beyond 6pm,” he said.
“So we have a heavy responsibility that has been placed on us.
“As Anthony announced, there will be a group of us sworn in tomorrow. Albo will be sworn in tomorrow. Albo will then go to the Quad and that says something about the focus we are putting on Australia. country on the international stage.
“Anthony was very eager to attend the Quad’s meeting, which is a very important meeting given the complexity of our strategic circumstances. And then we will very quickly work through things for an orderly transition to get our feet on the ground as quickly if we can.”
