In the concrete jungle of Downtown Los Angeles, the new Bar Clara aims to provide an urban oasis.
The Mediterranean-inspired rooftop bar opened Thursday atop Hotel Per La, which took over the old NoMad space in South Olive and Seventh Street, Eater LA reported this week. It is the first opening of the hotel, which will also include a restaurant, bar and lobby café on the ground floor in the near future.

At Bar Clara you can enjoy both food and drink, perfect for a summer sesh on the roof. The drinks menu, which is under the purview of bar director Coleen Morton and wine director Rick Arline, offers a range of options depending on your mood. In terms of cocktails, the Spritz Rainbow includes five different spritzes with ingredients that match their colorful names: yellow, orange, pink, red and purple. And on the wine list are some sustainable, natural and biodynamic glasses and bottles (this is LA after all…).
On the food front, executive chef Courtney Van Dyke has put together an extensive list of small plates and snacks, including the flaming cheese platter saganaki and lamb sliders with marinated cucumbers and feta. If you’re looking for something a little more filling, a salad like the niçoise con pulpo or a main dish like the herb-filled snapper might suffice.
While the drinks, food and view should be tempting enough, the bar also has a pretty good history. The name is a tribute to Claire Giannini, the first woman on the board of the Bank of Italy, which later became Bank of America. That inspiration may seem to come from left field, but the Hotel Per La occupies what used to be the Bank of Italy building.
However, we suspect that the rooftop bar will be a bit more inviting than a sofa.
