Man Utd transfer news: Attention turned to £49.6million double swoop after Arnautovic backlash | Football | Sport

Manchester United have turned their attention to Cody Gakpo and Sasa Kalajdzic after deciding to cool their interest in Marko Arnautovic. The Red Devils were keen to pursue a transfer from left field for the former West Ham and Stoke City villain, before supporters intervened who fiercely vetoed the signing.

United had even made a £7.2million offer for the 33-year-old, an offer that was turned down by Italian club Bologna.

The Old Trafford hierarchy would consider an improved offer before ultimately choosing to walk away from the negotiating table to pursue other goals.

Now The Times reports that Gakpo and Kalajdzic are the two names in their sights, as John Murtough offers to give Erik ten Hag some extra attacking options.

Ten Hag decided to set up Christian Eriksen as a makeshift false nine for the opening day of the season’s defeat against Brighton last Sunday, a call that has led to further transfer activity.

Ten Hag knows Gakpo well from his time in the Netherlands and the 23-year-old was on target when PSV defeated Ajax 2-1 in the KNVB cup final last season.

The Netherlands international can play in several frontline positions and is widely regarded as one of the best young talents in European football.

Meanwhile, a slew of clubs have expressed interest in Stuttgart striker Kalajdzic, who has yet to sign a new contract with the German club.

Therefore, Stuttgart is expected to consider a sale before the transfer window closes, although a new contract for Arnautovic’s international team-mate has not yet been ruled out.

The 25-year-old had an injury prone season last season, having previously scored 16 goals in 33 Bundesliga appearances during the 2020/21 season.

At six feet tall, the goalkeeper would be an alternative attacking option for Ten Hag, especially if United were forced to chase a game.

Kalajdzic is believed to be open to a Premier League motion after he also caught the eye of the likes of Brighton, Southampton and West Ham.

United are eager to sign a new striker regardless of Cristiano Ronaldo’s future, and the Portuguese veteran is still eager to go elsewhere.
