Tahith Chong has sent a heartfelt message to Birmingham City and its supporters after a rollercoaster season on loan with Blues. The gifted Manchester United striker is leaving St Andrew’s on loan at the end of his stint, where he impressed everyone with his talent and commitment.
Chong got off to a flying start to the season, regularly earning man of the match awards and giving Lee Bowyer’s side the cutting edge it so clearly needed. However, his progress was interrupted in late October when he suffered a seemingly harmless thigh injury that required surgery and kept him sidelined for four months.
He returned in late February, scoring within three minutes of his first start and suffering another hamstring injury a few weeks later. However, he managed to play the last game of the season in an hour – a 2-1 defeat to Blackburn Rovers.
And as he ponders his next chapter, the former Netherlands youth international took to Instagram to message Blues: “I’d like to thank Birmingham City as a whole for this season. I have felt the love from the moment I stepped in. Birmingham has felt like family to me over the past year and I will be forever grateful for that.
“Thank you to the manager for the confidence he showed me. All the staff who helped me through the season and finally I would like to thank the fans for all the support they have shown to the team. Birmingham will always be family. KRO.”
The Blues are known to be eager to see the 22-year-old back at the club next season, but head coach Lee Bowyer says he must first return to Old Trafford to prove himself to Erik ten Hag. Bowyer said earlier this month: “I think it’s too early, this is my personal opinion, Tahith should go back to Man U, because there is a new manager. He has to show the manager and fight for a position to get into their team – that’s what I think.
“If he doesn’t succeed, I know that if he does, he’ll rent him out. I know he’s had a great time here, he’s enjoyed working with us, he’s improved. I think he’s Would you like to come back? I’d like to think yes. The problem is that maybe there are others who want to hire him and who might offer us something else.”
Chong leaves Blues with one goal and three assists in 20 league appearances. It is alleged that United have activated the last year of his contract.
