Manchester United want to equal Chelsea for Aubameyang

Manchester United would like to compete with Chelsea for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

According to The Sun (h/t Daily Star), Manchester United would like to compete with Chelsea for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. But the Red Devils know they face a challenge to secure his signature.

New coach Erik ten Hag is eager to bolster his attacking options and have turned their attention to the former Arsenal captain. United had considered a transfer for the 33-year-old when he left the Emirates in January, but to no avail.

The player could now return to England after a six-month stint with Barcelona. Chelsea could use a number nine. A position that seems to haunt the players, a skilled, goal-rich and deadly striker can help lift that curse.

Thomas Tuchel could also use a familiar face, having coached the Gabonese during their time together at Borussia Dortmund.

Kai Havertz and Raheem Sterling have turned to play in the striker position for the past two games. With the fullbacks creating countless opportunities throughout the game, the absence of a true number nine is felt in the opponent’s box.

Aubayemang could become that presence. The 33-year-old is a proven striker in the Premier League and could help score a few more goals for the club. His record speaks for itself, he scored 68 times in 128 league games for the Gooners.

As Chelsea can also offer Champions League football, it could provide an extra incentive for the attacker to choose them over their rivals. The two clubs are also in contention for another Barcelona player, Frenkie de Jong. The Dutchman would be open to a move to Samford Bridge over Old Trafford.

The former Arsenal man could fit well into Tuchel’s system, having played under it before. If he stays with the La Liga club, he will probably get a lot less playing time. The arrival of Robert Lewandowski has made him the undisputed number one of the club in Catalonia.

It remains to be seen if Tuchel and co make a move for him. A clinical player who is also very good in the air, the 33-year-old would be a great addition to Tuchel’s squad for this season. Fans hope their team can continue their good run when they travel to Leeds United on Sunday.
