Naomi Osaka withdraws from Italian Open with Achilles tendon injury

ROME — Naomi Osaka withdrew from the Italian Open on Monday with a left Achilles tendon injury.

Osaka injured herself in her first round win over Anastasia Potapova at the Madrid Open 10 days ago and said she is “not healed yet”.

“I have to be careful, especially in the run-up to Roland Garros,” said Osaka.

The French Open starts in less than two weeks.

Osaka was scheduled to open against Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo, to whom she lost in the second round in Madrid.

Osaka will be replaced in the draw by Nuria Parrizas Diaz.
