One person was killed and eight others were injured Friday night when shots were fired at a large party at a strip mall hookah lounge in the San Bernardino County community of Highland.
The shooting in the town east of San Bernardino was reported just before midnight on the 3600 block of East Highland Avenue. Officers found a large crowd of about 100 people in the area for a party in a hookah lounge.
A shooting victim who was outside died at the scene. A woman at the scene who identified herself as the victim’s grandmother said he is 20 years old.
Eight other people have been taken to hospital with apparently non-life-threatening injuries, police said. The sheriff initially said ten people had been shot, but later increased that number to nine, including the deceased victim.
Police are looking for two gunmen in connection with the shooting, a source close to the investigation told NBCLA. The source said most of the injured victims were trapped in the crossfire and were not the intended target.
Evidence markers were placed at a nearby gas station. Crime scene tape blocked the intersection near the Tha Blu Flame lounge early Saturday.
NBCLA has contacted the company for comment.
The motive for the shooting is under investigation, police said.
No arrests were reported. Detailed descriptions of the gunmen were not readily available.
Highland is located just east of San Bernardino at the foot of the San Bernardino Mountains.
