NYC victim of NYC MTA bus hit-and-run is Patrick Varriale

Police have identified the victim of a fatal accident involving an MTA bus on Staten Island.

The fallen pedestrian, Patrick Varriale, 69, was a resident of the New Springville section, authorities said Friday night.

Varriale was found just before 4:40 a.m. Friday, unconscious at the intersection of Forest Hill Road and Platinum Avenue, a block from the MTA Yukon Bus Depot, police said. He suffered “serious” physical injuries and died at the scene, police said.

A preliminary investigation found that a 52-year-old male MTA bus driver was traveling east on Forest Hill when he turned left onto Platinum Avenue heading north, authorities said.

Varriale was crossing the site when the pedestrian was hit by the bus, police said. The bus left the crime scene and continued north on Platinum Avenue, police said.

The NYPD Collision Investigation Squad is investigating and will determine whether there is a crime, police said.

The bus driver has been removed from service, according to the MTA, depending on the results of the investigation.
