LA GUNS singer Phil Lewis commented on the addition of drummer Shawn Duncan to the ranks of the group.
Earlier this month, Duncan joined LA GUNS as a replacement for Shane Fitzgibbonwho had played with the band from 2016 to 2019 and again from 2021 to his final departure.
After metal sludge‘s Stevie Rachelle shared a link on Facebook to an article about LA GUNS‘ newest drummer switch, Lewis went to the comments section to explain Fitzgibonleave the group. He wrote: “Scotty Coogan has been spread quite thinly this summer with several touring comments and Shane Fitzgibon who was supposed to do the tour just found out his wife is pregnant and wants to stay close to her so Thrace [Guns, L.A. GUNS guitarist] invited Shawn Duncan down for a bang and it sounded great right out of the gate.
“Bands of our genre and format need to be fluid with members, of course we hate to see someone leave, but the reality is we can’t afford to pay members if we’re not working, so obviously the decks start to shuffle.
“Me and T are tight as two old ladies Johnny Martin [bass] is awesome and the truth is i joined his band when i agreed to the reunion and unbelievably lucky we still have Ace Von Johnson [guitar] in the fold.
“Rehearsals sounded great and were completely tense and loaded for the summer tour”.
Duncan has recorded with and/or performed on stage with a number of notable hard rock musicians over the years, including: Dizzy Reed (GUNS N’ ROSES),Jack Russell and Mark Kendall (LARGE WHITE),Gilby Clarke (GUNS N’ ROSES),Frank Hannon (TESLA) and Rudy Sarzo (OZZY OSBOURNE, WHITESNAKE, SILENT RIOT).
last Nov, cooganan accomplished session drummer who has also played with Ace Frehley† LYNCH CROWD and Lita Fordaccused Lewis from “evoking” a reason for his departure from the group. In particular, he denied Lewisthe claim that coogan resign LA GUNS because he “didn’t have a studio” where he could put down the drum tracks for the band’s latest album, “Checkered Past”resulting in LA GUNS‘ decision to hire old engineer Adam Hamilton to play on the record instead.
As for the real reason he left? LA GUNS† coogan said: “To be honest, the reason I made that decision is because I moved on. I like to play with Tiffany and Stephen Pearcy† And there was confusion about these dates that came with LA GUNS† Because I was told we wouldn’t be touring until New Years Day. And so I planned dates. And then they said, ‘Oh, you have to do these shows.’ And I said, ‘I can’t.’ So that was all there. And then the way that was handled – I’m not going to name names or anything, but the way it was handled, I just got a really bad taste in my mouth. And I said, ‘You know what, boys? I’m going to bow and do what I’m doing now,’ that’s the Tiffany ties Stephen Pearcy† And I’m very happy – I’m very healthy and happy to be doing those two gigs now. And I didn’t want to go back and do things weird with LA GUNS† So I just decided to stop.”
LA GUNS recently announced a 40-date US tour for this spring, summer and winter. The trek begins June 1 in Liverpool, New York and runs through New Year’s Eve in West Hollywood, California.
“Checkered Past” was released last November via Frontiers Music Srl† The effort marked LA GUNS‘ third album since the core members of the band’s 2016 reunion Lewis and guns† It follows 2017 “The Missing Peace” and 2019 “The Devil You Know”†
In April 2021, a settlement was reached between drummer Steve Riley and guns and Lewis about the rights to the LA GUNS name. Under the terms of the settlement agreement, guns and Lewis continue to operate under the LA GUNS trademark, while Riley and his bandmates from the other version of LA GUNS will now operate under the new name RILEY’S LA GUNS†
LA GUNS was founded in 1983 and has sold over six million records, including 1988 “LA guns” and 90s “Tense and Loaded”both of which were certified gold. “Tense and Loaded” contained the hit single “The Ballad of Jayne” that went to no. 33 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 and No. 25 on the Mainstream Rock charts.
