Possible Explosives Found in River in Middletown: Police – NBC Connecticut

Police are investigating after a resident of Middletown found what are believed to be explosive mortar shells, similar to World War II devices, in the water.

The resident was magnet fishing in the Mettabasset River off East Street when they found the devices. The person is said to have taken them home and notified the police.

Middletown and Connecticut state police searched the area for more grenades, but nothing else was found.

The State Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service responded, but they were unable to determine whether the grenades were alive.

Police then contacted the United States Air Force’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit to remove the items and dispose of them safely.

Additional information was not immediately available.
