LEXINGTON, Kentucky (LEX 18) – A 20-year-old sports rider died Friday morning after a training accident at the Keeneland track.
At around 8 a.m. Friday, Callie Witt was thrown from a 2-year-old horse. Witt was a practice rider for trainer Joe Sharp.
Keeneland officials said the track’s medical team immediately treated her life-threatening injuries. Lexington Fire and Emergency was on the scene within six minutes.
Witt was transported to the University of Kentucky’s emergency department, where she was pronounced dead of blunt force injuries.
“We are heartbroken by this tragic loss,” said Shannon Arvin, Keeneland president and CEO. “Our hearts and prayers go out to Callie’s family, friends and our collective racing community at this difficult time.”
Witt was born in Nebraska and attended the Bluegrass Community and Technical College.
