Predicted position of Guardian writers 1st (NB: this is not necessarily Will Unwin’s prediction, but the average of our writers’ tips)
Position from last season 1st
Odds of Winning the League (via Oddschecker) 13-18
Winning the Champions League is the focus for City, although anything short of first place domestically will be a disappointment for a team looking to set higher standards every season.
Pep Guardiola has shaken things up a bit and acquired something akin to a traditional number 9 in the form of Erling Haaland. He is the man to make a difference in those tight European games and gives City an option they haven’t had since Sergio Aguero was at his best. Winning trophies is what City is doing these days and doing it in style is the only way.
Despite comings and goings, Kevin De Bruyne will still be at the center of everything in the team and his performance will be critical to City’s chances in all four competitions. The Belgian dragged City to the Premier League title last season and is hoping for a little more support from his teammates this time.
Liverpool’s evolution and improvement will keep City on their toes and ensure there is at least a two-horse race for the title. City are up to the challenge and there is no doubt they will rest on their laurels, they hope to do better than last season and have the tools to do it. If you’re used to dominating, giving up isn’t an option and the addition of a few new faces should re-energize a team at the top of their sport.
