Princess Charlene returns to public life

Princess Charlene looked solemn today as she appeared for the second consecutive week at an official engagement to her husband Prince Albert of Monaco.

The royal couple were joined by their seven-year-old twins, Princess Gabriella and Prince Jacques, at the Sainte Dévote Rugby Tournament – which Princess Charlene co-hosted.

Charlene, 44, has rarely been seen with Albert since she spent about 10 months in South Africa last year. She contracted severe sinusitis while on a charity trip, which landed her in hospital and delayed her return to Monaco.

She returned home in November but left for Switzerland almost immediately to be treated for “exhaustion.”

Today’s photos mark the second time the Monaco royal family has been seen together in public since Charlene returned to the principality after her treatment.

The family attended the Monaco E-Prix last weekend, with Charlene’s return to public life being described as “an event that waited many, many months in the principality”.

Today, the royal was pictured in a navy blue midi dress, with an open button collar and a tie detail at the waist. She paired the chic dress with simple, black slingback kitten heels and wore her platinum blonde hair combed back.

Charlene opted for simple makeup and dainty silver earrings for this afternoon’s engagement.

Charlene has been dealing with several health issues in recent months, including what the palace previously termed a “state of profound general fatigue,” which has left her largely out of the public eye.

The Palace of Monaco has consistently denied media reports of a rift between Charlene and Prince Albert, the ruler of the principality, who married in 2011.

Rumors that the pair were incompatible were sparked from the start, with Charlene drawing a barrage of attention due to a seemingly bad dose of pre-wedding jitters, which reportedly saw her take refuge in her country’s embassy and be nicknamed “the runaway.” bride’ got.

Charlene was first absent for 10 months from her native South Africa, where she was contracted and hospitalized for a serious sinus infection that delayed her return to Monaco.

She underwent surgery for an ear, nose and throat infection in October after checking into a hospital in Durban under a pseudonym, a palace source said at the time.

Friends previously told Page Six that the mother of two “nearly died” while in her home country, while her husband spoke out to say she is suffering from “exhaustion, both emotional and physical.”

“She was clearly exhausted, physically and emotionally. She was overwhelmed and couldn’t handle official duties, life in general or even family life,” Albert told People magazine in November.

A palace statement released on December 23 revealed that Albert and the couple’s children planned to visit Charlene over the Christmas break, and also asked that the family’s privacy be respected.

It added that the princess is “recovering in a satisfying and reassuring manner, although it may take a few more months for her to fully recover.”

But leading royal journalist Stephane Bern has long speculated that Charlene’s litany of alleged health problems could just be a cover to excuse her for participating in royal activities alongside her husband.

Bern said in January last year that Charlene was expected to travel to visit French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, but suddenly fell ill.

“The princess had a sudden gastroenteritis,” he said.

“The palace has had to invoke a suffering princess so many times that the Monegasques find it hard to believe these days. By howling wolf, Jacques and Gabriella’s mother has discredited and isolated herself.”
