Radcliffe Asda shopper in tears after generous customer pays for food

A customer at Asda’s Radcliffe store was left in tears after a Good Samaritan paid nearly £200 for her groceries.

Sinead Riley and her partner William Jordan were shopping for their daughter’s first birthday, school uniforms and other household items at the Asda store in Riverside Retail Park.

Once at the register, a generous customer noticed the family of five.

The customer insisted on paying the £196 bill and told Sinead to spend her money enjoying her time with her three young daughters.

Sinead said: “We were both done with work and took all three girls to Asda Radcliffe for some of the school uniform shop, food, baby milk and with Fern’s first birthday in a few days, a cake and a few presents.

“I pulled out my card to pay when the lovely lady after me offered to pay for our entire store! The fate.

“In shock I said, it’s okay, don’t worry, I’ve had enough.

“But the lady insisted and told me that my children were beautiful and that I should spend my money to enjoy my time with them.

“I couldn’t hold back my tears and gave her the biggest hug. It came completely out of the blue.

“The lady didn’t know us from Adam. I’d never seen her in my life.”

Sinead’s mother, Julie, worked in the store for 25 years.

She said: “These are difficult times, especially for working families with three young children.

“It was such a beautiful thoughtless gesture that I’m still in shock.”

The store’s community champion, Tammie Wakefield, said: “I have no words for it – this customer’s generosity is outstanding. I couldn’t believe it when I heard it.

“I was stunned, but I wasn’t surprised because our customers in the Radcliffe store are simply the best.”

After the friendly gesture, Sinead wants to show her appreciation by ‘pay it forward’.

She said: “I cried all the way home and I called my mum crying too.

“I never expected a stranger to pay for a three-figure shop for a family she’s never met. So, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you.

“The colleague at the cash register was also in shock. If we get the chance, we will return the act of kindness to another stranger.”
