Rio predicts whether Cristiano Ronaldo will stay or leave Manchester United

Rio Ferdinand predicts Cristiano Ronaldo will stay with Manchester United this summer.

Speaking to FIVE on YouTube, Ferdinand expects Ronaldo to stay at Manchester United as the club simply cannot afford to let him go.

Ferdinand predicts whether Cristiano Ronaldo will stay or leave

Ferdinand believes Manchester United are persevering and will keep his former team-mate for the last year of his contract at Old Trafford.

He said: “Man United cannot afford to let him go. That’s the problem.

“Suppose we believe the reports, and you have to respect that he has had some problems personally. Where are Man United now getting 20 goals in the transfer market?

“The only reason Manchester United won’t let Cristiano Ronaldo go now is because there will be a void of more than 20 goals in the team. You can’t just let them walk out the door without reinforcements.”

Ferdinand expressed his skepticism that Anthony Martial will be able to lead the line effectively in Ronaldo’s absence. In seven seasons with the club, he has only scored over 20 once and last season he scored just twice.

He said: “Martial is coming back, yes, but he still has a lot to prove. We are in the preseason. The front line looks good, lively, let’s go back to the season when the pressure is on, I want to see the same. Then I start to say yes, get the contracts out.”

Ferdinand makes a good point that no one should get carried away with Anthony Martial’s form for the season. That said, it was encouraging to see the Frenchman score again.

United have been linked with signing two forwards, Sasa Kalajdzic of Stuttgart and Benjamin Sesko of Red Bull Salzburg, The Mail reports.

Both players would add vital depth up front, but neither would guarantee 20 goals. Ronaldo hit 24 last season, although perhaps at the expense of those around him. No other attacker has scored more than six goals.

United still have a month to make a decision about Ronaldo and to sign one or two replacements. Ferdinand has made his prediction, but there are no guarantees how this will turn out.

Dan still wonders what would have happened if United had kept Juan Veron…
