Royal Children’s Hospital waiting times up to eight hours

Emergency wait times at the Royal Children Hospital in Melbourne rose to more than eight hours on Monday night.

“We waited more than eight hours…and most of the night,” Stuart Lewena, the hospital’s chief of critical care, told 3AW Tuesday morning.

He told Neil Mitchell that Monday was a “remarkably busy day” with a sick child coming through the door every two minutes.

“Last night we executed the kind of plans we would if we had an impending disaster,” he said.

The doctor said that while people thought life was returning to normal, the health care system was “anything but normal” at this point.

The triage line extended to Flemington Road Monday night and five doctors not on the list came to help cope with the crisis, Lewena said.
