Someone has created a virtual reality tech demo of Sony and Team Icos’ 2005 action-adventure game Shadow of the Colossus, which can be played on Oculus Quest headsets.
The developer, Red Coin Co, launched the game this week on the SideQuest platform as Shadow of the Colossus VR. SideQuest allows VR developers to unofficially publish games or demos for Meta Quest and Quest 2 without the strict requirements of the main Quest Store, but requires users to sideload the games.
A trailer was released for the free downloadable game and it showed off some of the core gameplay involving traversal, using bows and arrows and climbing the real giant to exploit weaknesses. The developer notes that the demo is the result of four months of work and it looks very early in development. The player’s behemoth, weapons and hands are basic models, and the architecture of the small arena is somewhat reminiscent of Shadow of the Colossus.
While Sony has no history of shutting down fan projects, Red Coin Co does state on the game page that “the product is a concept piece and will not be used for monetization.” There are other fangames of popular properties on SideQuest, including Harry Potter and Stranger Things, but have many different titles or explicitly say it is not affiliated with the official property.
Red Coin Co said it will continue to expand Shadow of the Colossus VR with a roadmap that would include community feedback and fix bugs.
MetaQuest 2
The Meta Quest 2 offers more power, resolution and flexibility over the original virtual headset. It’s a complete, all-in-one headset that doesn’t need to be tethered to a PC or smartphone to work.
