Steel safe found under Mulholland Drive – NBC Los Angeles

A shared question kept residents busy Tuesday night at a scenic view of Mulholland Drive in the Hollywood Hills.

What’s in the safe?

On Tuesday, August 16, 2022, a vault is pulled from a Hollywood Hills canyon.

The wild speculation began when Los Angeles firefighters carrying heavy rescue equipment pulled two large vaults from the bush-covered canyon on Tuesday afternoon. The mysterious discovery was made near the Universal City lookout point, which offers sweeping views of the San Fernando Valley to the north.

Instead of expansive views, residents took in a more unusual view of the site when a steel vault about 4 1/2 feet, 600 pounds was pulled from a thick brush. When firefighters retrieved that safe, they saw another smaller safe not far away.

Both were pulled slowly up the hill using ropes during a three-hour operation on steep and rough terrain.

The smaller safe turned out to be empty, but the second one remains locked on Tuesday night. The safes were taken by the LAPD.

“It could very well have been taken in a break-in or robbery,” LAPD Detective Tim Kirkpatrick said. “It’s evidence and we want to follow up on all possible leads.”

Kirkpatrick said the LAPD has a team of professional safe-crackers ready to work on the large safe on Wednesday.
