Stephen Harper backs Pierre Poilievre as party leader

OTTAWA — Former Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper has endorsed Pierre Poilievre as the party’s next leader.

In a rare public return to partisan politics, Harper a short video on Twitter discuss his approval.

Harper says the contest to lead the party is filled with candidates, but one stands out.

The former prime minister says Poilievre served as a strong minister under him when the Conservatives were last in power, before being defeated in 2015 by Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Harper says Poilievre has been the government’s “most outspoken and effective critic” in recent years in opposition.

He says Poilievre has spoken about pressing economic issues such as debt and inflation, and presented solutions that are “rooted in sound conservative ideas.”
