Test Driving Wiltons’ 280th Anniversary Dinner Menu | test drive

There has always been social distancing between tables at Wiltons – that is to give the trolleys plenty of room to roam around the room.

At a time when a restaurant is doing well into its teenage years, the venerable Wiltons is posting an astonishing 280 years of serving food to Londoners.

Wiltons began life as an oyster stall on the Haymarket in 1742 when George II was on the throne, and has been in its current location on Jermyn Street since the 1980s. Now it’s the kind of place where you might as well see a star on stage and on screen (Game of Thrones’ Gwendolyn Christie was last in attendance) as a member of the royal family.

To celebrate its 280th anniversary, the St. James restaurant has come up with a seven-course anniversary menu that they will be serving to guests throughout the summer. The menu costs £280 (see what they did there?) and features many of the restaurant’s signature dishes, along with good wine pairings.

We went by to try it out. If you feel like trying it for yourself, here’s what you’ll love:

wilour's 280th birthday dinner menuCrispy oyster with oyster mayonnaise, cucumber and watercress. Served with Wilton’s House Chablis. Oysters are how Wiltons started, and they’re still a big part of what’s on offer today, with masterclasses offered year-round in the restaurant’s oyster bar.

wilour's 280th birthday dinner menuSecret Smokehouse’s smoked salmon with crab, avocado and Aquitaine caviar. Served with a Pouilly Fume from Comaine A Cailbourdin.

wilour's 280th birthday dinner menuLobster bisque with a lobster, Armagnac and tarragon cream – served with a Saint Romain Blanc Bourgogne.

At this point, you have the choice of opting for what is probably the restaurant’s most ordered dish, their Dover Sole, or a more meaty option of lamb. In an ideal world, you dine with people who order them all so you can try them both.

wilour's 280th birthday dinner menuLemon sole garnished with tiny Isle of Wight tomatoes and served with a Bruno Clair Marsannay Rose.

wilour's 280th birthday dinner menuRhug Estate lamb with English peas, baby gem and tarragon – served with a glass of Cote de Beaune from Domaine Jean & Gilles Lafouge.

After this, there’s a quick, yet delicious, green apple mousse palate cleanser before reaching the intoxicating heights of dessert.

wilour's 280th birthday dinner menuEnglish strawberry souffle with pistachio ice cream and served with a glass of Nyetimber Demi-Sec.

Finally, it’s hardly a trip to Wiltons if you don’t get a visit from the sticky and spirits trolley, so the last course of petit fours comes with a glass of Remy Martin.
