Three academy stars involved in Manchester United’s first-team training

Manchester United could give the youth a chance when they face Crystal Palace on the last day of the Premier League season next week.

Ralf Rangnick’s side are currently on a 15-day break after their humiliating defeat to Brighton last weekend, with their next game a week away on Sunday.

United are assured of sixth or seventh place in the Premier League this year, with their last appearance at Selhurst Park being seen as a hopeless game.

As a result, Rangnick was able to switch his selection by giving a number of young people a chance, and on Friday three academy candidates got the chance to train with the first team.

Squad photos teased by the club on social media showed Allvaro Fernandez, 19, Shola Shoretire, 18, and Teden Mengi, 20, all dressed in club attire as they joined the session.

Shoretire has made four first-team appearances and became the youngest ever player to represent the club in European competition when he played from the bench against Real Sociedad last year.

Mengi played two seniors at United himself and has now been back at the club for several weeks since an injury cut his loan spell at Championship club Birmingham City.

Fernandez has yet to take the field at first-team level but is highly regarded by United coaches. On Wednesday evening, he was named the club’s U23 Player of the Year.
