Treasurer defends super-for-homes plan; Ukrainian troops reach the Russian border; Search resumes for missing grandfather in Victoria; NSW records 10,972 new COVID-19 cases, 16 deaths; Victoria records 13,694 new cases, 20 deaths

Shadow treasurer Jim Chalmers has taken another major blow to the coalition’s budget management.

Speaking in Logan today, Chalmers accused the government of building up debt irresponsibly.

“They had doubled the blame for the pandemic,” he said.

“These were the same characters who went through Australia and said the debt and net debt of $175 billion was a debt and deficit disaster.

“Now, for the next year, I think it’s $715 billion or so.”

Chalmers said the debt in this year’s budget is not entirely a result of the pandemic.

“This government has an excuse for everything and a plan for nothing,” Chalmers said.

“They take credit for things like rising commodity prices, but they don’t take responsibility for wasting $5.5 billion on submarines that will never be built.”
