Tried Drake & DJ Khaled’s favorite Toronto Resto and I’m already planning my next trip

With both Drake and DJ Khaled recently showing some love for Toronto’s Italian restaurant Sotto Sotto, I decided to give it a try myself.

The much loved spot is in the heart of Yorkville and is definitely on the pricier side, but with my boyfriend and I’s anniversary approaching, we decided it was worth the splurge.

This is how our experience was:

The food

Gordonia appetizer. Right: L’amatriciana.

We decided to order the antipasto gordonia ($28.95) and the beef carpaccio ($24.95), and while I enjoyed both, the antipasto was the star.

It came with a delicious smokey grilled tiger prawns, calamari, caprese salad, grilled eggplant, zucchini, mushrooms and Asiago cheese.

This may sound weird to say, but the zucchini was my favorite thing we ate all night! Prior to this experience I was quite ambivalent about the vegetable, but something about how they cooked it made it sing. It was clear, sour, well seasoned and truly an experience.

As a main course we had two pasta dishes: the pennete via frattina ($27.95), which is penne in a rose sauce with asparagus and vodka infused salmon, and l’amatriciana ($27.95), which is bucatini in a tomato sauce with crispy pork cheek.

Both were delicious and came in pretty hefty portion sizes. As the restaurant is fancy I expected a small portion but it was so generous I couldn’t really finish my meal.

In total before the tip, our bill came to $152.83 for two drinks, two appetizers and two pasta dishes. It’s a bit on the pricier side of what we normally spend on a night out, but given the quality of the food and experience, it was totally worth it.

The drinks

A soda, a cocktail, and my stegosaurus purse named Genevive.

My friend ordered a “French 75” gin based cocktail that cost about $20, and the presentation was very nicely done.

I personally ordered a limonata (a lemon soda) and it was pleasantly spicy.

The wine list is incredibly extensive and while you can pick up a bottle for about $60, I also saw an offer for a bottle that costs almost $3000!

That might fit Drake’s budget, but I’ll stick with my $6 soda for now!

the vibes

When we arrived at the restaurant, a Porsche was parked in front of the door in the parking lot, so the chic atmosphere was immediately there.

The hostess is beautifully decorated and we were greeted right away. Before sitting down, we had a chance to peek at the bar where it seemed like solo diners could have a seat, which is a great option if you’re having a date night with yourself.

The sitting area had romantic lighting – dim, but not so dark as to be hard to see – and fairy lights that added a bit of quirkiness to the whole feel.

Also, the dining area didn’t have many seats, so it had a rather intimate feel to it as well.

The service

Our waiter Zeno was an absolute gem and made our experience at the restaurant so beautiful. His eye for detail and his passion for what he does is evident and I can’t say more than how damn nice he was to us.

From making sure our water was filled to trying to tempt us to get a tiramisu (we were too full, but next time!), I hope to see him again when we go back for another special occasion.

Everyone we interacted with was very nice but shout out to Zeno because he is the best!

I thoroughly enjoyed our anniversary dinner at Sotto Sotto and I’ve already committed what I want to try next.

For our next visit I think we’ll split the charcuterie board, the cacio e pepe, and of course try the tiramisu that Zeno recommends so highly.

As for getting a reservation, I couldn’t really book online, but when I called on a Sunday, I was able to get a reservation for Tuesday, so I recommend contacting them directly.

All in all, I totally understand why it’s a hot spot for celebs – who knows, maybe we’ll run into Drake next time we’re there!
