Two dead after lightning strike near White House on Thursday

Two of those hospitalized Thursday night with life-threatening injuries after an apparent lightning strike in Lafayette Square, just north of the White House, have died, a DC police spokesman said Friday.

Four people — two men and two women — were seriously injured in the strike just before 7 p.m. in the center of the park, in a forest about 100 feet south-east of the Andrew Jackson statue, fire spokesman Vito Maggiolo said in a news report Thursday evening. US Secret Service and US Park Police provided assistance to the victims, which fire officials attributed to the victims’ ability to survive initially.
