UPDATE: Fresno police catch suspect hiding in Save Mart after jumping from ceiling

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Police say they have arrested a burglary suspect who has been hiding in a northeastern Fresno Save Mart for nearly two days.

After a police chase, a 20-hour stalemate and a day-long wait, officers finally arrested 28-year-old Pheng Vang after he came out of the supermarket ceiling.

Fresno Police Chief Paco Balderrama says that although most police units had supposedly withdrawn from the area on Friday, undercover officers were still waiting in place.

Original story follows.

Police have identified the burglary suspect who was the center of a 20-hour stalemate at a Save Mart in northeast Fresno earlier this week.

The suspect is 28-year-old Pheng Vang, who is on parole after serving a sentence for a previous burglary. He is wanted in connection with a break-in at Caruthers.

The stalemate began Thursday night after a brief chase that began when Fresno County Sheriff’s officers attempted to stop Vang at the River Park mall near Nees and Blackstone Avenues.

He then led officers to the Save Mart at Nees Avenue and First Street and barricaded himself in the grocery store.

The store and surrounding businesses were evacuated as police surrounded the area.

On Friday, Fresno’s SWAT agents entered the store with their K9s to search the building and nearby businesses, but they couldn’t find him. They did find evidence that he had been in the store.

Later on Friday, police announced that the suspect had escaped and that the Save Mart store would reopen soon.
