Vancouver’s Kitsilano Pool reopens | CTV News

A popular Vancouver outdoor pool reopens in time for the August long weekend, but officials warn those wanting to take a dip may have to wait in line.

The Vancouver Park Board announced last week that Kitsilano Pool would reopen before BC Day, as long as weather permits final repairs. On Tuesday, the board confirmed that the pool will open on Saturday for the first time this year.

Kits Pool is closed this summer due to extensive damage from a winter storm. The storm and a tidal wave in early January resulted in “significant cracks, cement slab movement and holes in the expansion joints,” the board said earlier.

It has been repaired, but visitors may notice stains on the pool floor.

“Staff assure swimmers that this is not dirt, but patchwork of the sealant used to temporarily fill the cracks,” the park board said. More permanent repairs will be made after the summer swimming season.

And the board warned that those who want to use the pool will have to wait in line. The city is struggling with a staff shortage, according to the VPB, and while it appears that there is enough space in the pool, the total capacity is based on a ratio of visitors to lifeguards. This means that the size of the pool doesn’t matter when it comes to how many people can swim in it at once.

Swimmers are asked to be patient and it is said that while there is room for substitutes, these places are not guaranteed. Online reservations can be made up to three days before the visit.

There are two entrances to the pool, one of which is for single visit prepaid online reservations only. Those swimmers can enter through the east side of the fenced area.

The main entrance is for those with online reservations made with Flexipass, 10-visit passes, and leisure pass holders, as well as drop-ins.

During the long weekend, Kits Pool is only open for public swimming sessions. Lane swimmers are told to go to Second Beach Pool instead.

Kits Pool will resume normal hours after the holidays, with morning swims and public swims spanning the morning and evening.

All of Vancouver’s outdoor pools are scheduled to be open until September 5.
